On August 3, 2025, Melbourne hosted the inaugural Ukrainian-Australian Book Fest, organized by the Ukrainian Women’s Association of Victoria. The event took place at the Ukrainian Community House in Essendon, a city recognized as part of UNESCO’s Cities of Literature network.
Festival Motto: “Love in Every Line”
This year’s festival brought together authors, poets, and storytellers from Ukraine, Australia, and the diaspora to celebrate literature as a vital means of preserving identity, culture, and intergenerational connection. The motto “Love in Every Line” reflects the deep passion for the Ukrainian language, culture, and community.
Program Highlights:
Keynote Speech by Olha Herasymiuk: Renowned Ukrainian journalist, author, and cultural leader, former Head of Ukraine’s National Council for TV and Radio Broadcasting, and UNESCO Memory of the World coordinator in Ukraine, shared her insights on the development of Ukrainian culture amid globalization.
Author Presentations and Book Signings: Writers and poets from Ukraine and Australia showcased their works and engaged with readers.
Children’s Corner: Bilingual readings and creative activities introduced young audiences to Ukrainian literary heritage.
Culinary Book Presentations and Tastings: Visitors explored Ukrainian culinary traditions through books and food experiences.
Diaspora Literature Exhibition: Showcased works reflecting the diverse experiences and stories of the Ukrainian diaspora.
Book Stalls and Coffee Corner: Attendees had the opportunity to purchase books by Ukrainian and Australian authors and enjoy coffee in a literary atmosphere.
