The Branch Members, 2024

The Malvy Branch is an active division of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Australia, bringing women together to support Ukrainian culture, education, and charitable causes. Since its establishment in 2013, the branch has become a vital part of Melbourne's Ukrainian community, organising numerous events that help preserve Ukrainian identity and support Ukraine during challenging times.

With the onset of the full-scale war in Ukraine, the activities of the Malvy Branch have taken on new vigour and depth. A particular focus is placed on supporting women and children affected by the war, as well as collecting humanitarian aid for Ukraine.

The Malvy Branch is deeply committed to preserving and promoting Ukrainian heritage through a variety of initiatives:

  • Cultural and Educational Activities: Members organise events that champion Ukrainian language, literature, and traditions. These include literary evenings, art events, and meetings with prominent figures from Ukrainian culture.

  • Malvy Literary Club: This club actively works to popularise Ukrainian literature, arranging readings, discussions, and research projects.

  • Charitable Work: The branch regularly hosts fundraising fairs and BBQ events. The funds raised are dedicated to supporting Ukraine, with a particular focus on aiding women and children affected by the ongoing war.

  • Community Welfare: The Malva Branch actively supports youth organisations and Ukrainian schools. They also participate in broader community initiatives aimed at assisting those in need.

  • Preserving Ukrainian Art: Members organise workshops, exhibitions, and festivals, ensuring that Ukrainian culture thrives and evolves in Australia.

  • Commemorative and Symbolic Events: The Malva Branch has initiated the tradition of planting kalyna (viburnum) bushes, a powerful symbol of Ukrainian resilience and unity. They also participate in honouring Ukrainian heroes by organising commemorative events, such as the "Honour the Warriors - Run for the Heroes of Ukraine" race.

Through its dedicated work, the branch continues the mission of the Ukrainian Women's Association of Australia: to nurture Ukrainian identity, assist Ukraine, and support one another within the community.
